First Grade Goals-4th Quarter

Reading

Read every single night with your child.

BEFORE READING: Make predictions about the characters and setting by looking at the cover.

DURING READING: Encourage your child to sound out unfamiliar words, self-correct errors, and reread for meaning.

AFTER READING: Discuss problem, solution, and draw conclusions.  Retell what happened using the words first, next, then, and last.

Once a week, have your child write a response to a story that they have read themselves or that you have read to them.  Encourage the use of capitals, punctuation, and correct spelling.  One example of a response could be a connection that they have to an event or a character in the story.

Math

Please work with your child on the following skills:

  • Counting mixed coins
  • Identifying part of a whole: 1/2, 1/4, 1/3
  • Using measurement tools (ruler, balance scale)
  • Solving story problems
  • Identifying the missing number (5 + _ =7)
  • Telling time to the hour and half hour
  • Identifying geometric shapes and patterns
