Check your child's redhomework folder for classroom teachers homework assignments.

Suggestions for improving reading: Have your child read 15 minutes each night. Review all vocabulary words and their meanings. Look for the phonics pattern words in the paper readers and the hardback reading book stories. Read your favorite book to work on fluency. Ask questions about the story your child read. Encourage your child to write about a story they read.

Suggestions for improving spelling: Have your child write their spelling words each night. Give your child a spelling test and have them spell the word orally. Use each spelling word in a complete sentence using correct punctuation and capitalization. Color-code the vowel patterns in the words. Write a story using the spelling words. Encourage your child to use the spelling word in their conversations daily.

Suggestions for improving math: Practice math facts nightly with flash cards. Give your child a timed math facts test and reward them for 100%. Learn the value of coins and practice counting change. Have your child help you figure out how much change you should receive when you pay at the counter. Practice telling time on a regular clock and review the minute hand and the five minute intervals. Learn how to regroup in the tens and hundreds columns. Continue to practice skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. Learn the place value of the numbers. (Example, ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands.) Know how to read numbers in the hundred thousands column.

May Field Trip
Dear Parents,
The second grade classes at Eastwood Elementary School
are taking a field trip to the St. Louis Zoo on:
May 2012
from 8:30-2:00
We have the opportunity to attend a class called “Meet the Vertebrates.” We feel that this activity helps the students meet the Illinois State Science Standards and helps to enrich our students learning experiences. We are allowed only 30 people in the classroom at a time. Some parents will not get to go in with their child. We are sorry in advance for this.
Sincerely,
2nd grade teachers.
