5TH GRADE OCTOBER NEWS
It's Leaf Collection Time!
Fifth Grade Team
October 11, 2011
Our students have been busy gathering leaves from different trees these past few weeks. Each child needed to collect at least 10 leaves and bring them to school by October 3rd. We have been using many resource books to identify each leaf. Last week we also learned how to take notes and write good informational paragraphs about our leaves. Now the students are completing the project at home, finishing their paragraphs and adding a personal, creative touch to their leaf collection books. We look forward to sharing our finished products after the October 26th due date. For those students who still need information about each tree, check out the following web sites for help. After school help is also available on Mondays and Wednesdays in our classrooms. Please feel free to contact your child's teacher if you have any questions about this project.

Here's what's going on in our other subject areas!
math: Students are learning to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. Check out our ice cream cones in the 5th grade hallway! We're working on our incentive for passing the multiplication timed tests.
language arts: We're focusing on our summarizing skills and determining main ideas and details in both nonfiction and fictional texts. We're using these skills to improve our written language as well as we write expository and persuasive essays.
social studies: We are beginning our unit on the American Revolution and learning about many important historical individuals in this time period.
CONGRATULATIONS to our star bee students! ☺
